Welcome to Abroad Horizon.
As an arts presenter at a small college in Vermont, I have the honor of working with visiting artists from abroad. Unfortunately, the process of visas and taxation for foreign nationals is often challenging, at best.
In a country whose foreign relations are strained at the moment, opportunities for cultural exchange and dialogue are paramount. American nonprofit arts organizations provide an important public service by presenting foreign guest artists in performances, educational events and cultural programs in communities across the country. The delays and unpredictability in visa processing have made it increasingly difficult for international artists to appear in the United States.
While I am neither an immigration lawyer nor a tax accountant, I hope my “tips from the trenches” can make the process of bringing visiting performers to the U.S. a less daunting experience. I will also share news and updates in the area of artists from abroad.
When recently asked why I work in the arts, I replied, “…the privilege of working with brilliant, creative, talented, innovative, passionate people – artists, teachers, students, legislators, colleagues and patrons alike – who come together across many miles, disciplines, cultures, faiths and beliefs, to experience art together.
For me, every performance feels like world peace; achieved in 2 acts, with a 15 minute intermission.”
